Methamphetamine is a stimulant that can cause a substance use disorder and serious medical and psychiatric complications, including heart problems, severe sleep disruption, malnutrition, anxiety, paranoia, psychosis, and overdose. Illicit stimulants may also be contaminated with fentanyl.
There is no FDA-approved medication specifically for methamphetamine use disorder. Contingency management is the behavioral intervention with the strongest evidence. Cognitive behavioral therapy and community reinforcement may also be helpful.
Treatment should evaluate stimulant use patterns, other substances, mood, psychosis, trauma, sleep, nutrition, cardiovascular symptoms, infectious-disease risk, and safety. Severe agitation, hallucinations with dangerous behavior, chest pain, stroke symptoms, very high body temperature, or suicidal thoughts require urgent evaluation.
Some medications may be considered off-label for selected patients, but benefits and risks should be reviewed by a qualified clinician.
Early recovery may involve fatigue, depressed mood, sleep changes, and strong cravings. Structured routines, nutrition, sleep support, behavioral treatment, and ongoing monitoring can help. Treatment plans should be adjusted rather than abandoned when symptoms persist or use recurs.
Carry naloxone because fentanyl contamination is possible. Avoid using alone and call 911 for a suspected overdose or severe medical symptoms. Contact Mainspring Recovery for current stimulant-treatment options.
