While the term Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is still commonly used, MOUD and MAUD are more specific terms that recognize medication as an evidence-based treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorders. Medication can be an important part of recovery and may help reduce cravings, manage withdrawal symptoms, support treatment engagement, and reduce health risks associated with continued substance use.
MOUD is an evidence-based treatment for individuals with opioid use disorder. FDA-approved medications include buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone. These medications work in different ways, and the appropriate option depends on each person’s individual needs and clinical circumstances.
Suboxone®, a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone, is one medication that may be considered for opioid use disorder. For appropriate individuals, buprenorphine-based medications can help reduce opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms and support continued engagement in recovery.
Medication may also be appropriate for individuals with alcohol use disorder. FDA-approved medications include naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram. Depending on the medication, MAUD may help reduce cravings, support abstinence, or reduce the likelihood of returning to alcohol use.
Vivitrol®, an extended-release injectable form of naltrexone, may be an option for some individuals with alcohol use disorder or opioid use disorder.
There is no single medication that is right for everyone. At Mainspring Recovery, experienced medical providers will assess you individually to determine whether medication is appropriate and which options may best support your treatment and recovery goals.
Your assessment may include your substance use history, diagnosis, current substance use, withdrawal risk, medical and psychiatric history, previous treatment experiences, current medications and potential interactions, treatment goals, and personal preferences. Certain medications also have specific clinical requirements that must be considered before they can be safely initiated.
Medication decisions are made collaboratively between you and your medical provider. You will have an opportunity to discuss your options, ask questions, and understand the potential benefits and considerations of medications recommended for you.
You will not navigate medication treatment alone. Our nursing staff are available to support you throughout your treatment experience.
Nursing staff can provide medication education, monitor how you are responding to prescribed medications, identify and communicate potential side effects or concerns, and coordinate with your medical provider when additional evaluation may be needed.
As your needs change, your treatment team can continue to evaluate your response and make clinically appropriate recommendations to support your health, safety, and recovery.
Medication can be one component of a comprehensive treatment plan. Depending on your individual needs, treatment at Mainspring Recovery may also include individual and group therapy, case management, recovery support, psychiatric services, treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions, and continued-care planning.
