Family Support in Addiction Recovery

Recovery Is Stronger With Support

Dr. Nicole Erkfitz, LCSW
Chief Operating Officer

At Mainspring Recovery, we recognize that family support can play an important role in addiction treatment and long-term recovery. We also know that family means something different to everyone.

For us, family extends beyond immediate or biological relatives. Your support system may include a spouse or partner, parent, sibling, adult child, extended family member, close friend, mentor, or another trusted person who plays a meaningful and supportive role in your life.

You define who your support system is.

From the beginning of treatment, clients are encouraged and offered opportunities to identify the people they consider safe and supportive and, when clinically appropriate and with the client’s consent, involve those individuals in the recovery process.

Involving Your Support System From the Start

Building a strong recovery support system begins with understanding who can positively contribute to your treatment and continued recovery.

During the assessment and treatment-planning process, your treatment team will work with you to identify the people in your life who may be appropriate to involve in your care. Participation is based on your preferences, clinical needs, safety, appropriate boundaries, and applicable confidentiality requirements.

The goal is not simply to involve family for the sake of involvement. It is to help you build a healthy, informed, and sustainable support system for recovery.

Weekly Family and Support System Program

Once safe and supportive individuals have been identified, Mainspring Recovery offers a weekly one-hour family and support system program designed to help the people supporting you better understand recovery and strengthen the skills they need to support both you and themselves.

The program may help participants learn about:

  • Substance use disorders and the recovery process
  • Healthy communication and listening skills
  • Boundaries and appropriate support
  • The difference between supporting recovery and enabling unhealthy behaviors
  • How to respond to challenges during recovery
  • Rebuilding trust and strengthening relationships
  • Recognizing their own needs, emotions, and stress
  • Developing healthy coping and self-care strategies
  • Supporting continued recovery after treatment

Supporting the People Who Support You

Addiction and behavioral health challenges can affect more than the individual receiving treatment. The people closest to someone in recovery may also experience stress, fear, uncertainty, strained relationships, or difficulty knowing how to help.

That is why our approach to family support in addiction treatment is not solely focused on teaching loved ones how to support the client. We also want members of your support system to have opportunities to learn, grow, and care for their own well-being.

A healthy support system is strongest when the people within it have the tools and boundaries they need to be their best selves, too.

Building a Recovery Community That Lasts Beyond Treatment

Treatment is one part of the recovery journey. The relationships, resources, and support available after treatment can also be important components of continued recovery.

By involving supportive people during treatment, clients and their loved ones can begin practicing healthier communication, establishing appropriate boundaries, and developing a shared understanding of recovery before the transition to the next stage of care.

At Mainspring Recovery, our goal is to help clients leave treatment with more than a discharge plan. We want them to have a recovery support system that understands how to encourage progress while maintaining healthy boundaries and caring for their own well-being.
