MDMA and Other Club Drug Treatment (Synthetic Hallucinogens)

Dr. Lauren Grawert
Medical Director

MDMA, sometimes called ecstasy or molly, is a psychoactive drug with stimulant and hallucinogenic effects. Products sold as MDMA may contain other substances, including methamphetamine, synthetic cathinones, or fentanyl. Risks can include overheating, dehydration, abnormal sodium levels, heart problems, anxiety, panic, depression, and impaired judgment.

There is no FDA-approved medication specifically for MDMA use disorder. Treatment is individualized and may include behavioral therapy, monitoring of mental and physical health, and care for co-occurring substance use or psychiatric conditions.

Clinical Assessment

The treatment team may assess frequency and amount of use, other substances, sleep, mood, memory, anxiety, trauma, cardiovascular symptoms, and risky environments. Acute confusion, very high body temperature, seizure, severe agitation, chest pain, or loss of consciousness requires emergency care.

Behavioral Treatment and Recovery Support

Motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral approaches, relapse-prevention planning, and recovery support may help participants identify triggers and build alternatives. Because pills and powders can be adulterated, harm-reduction education and naloxone access are appropriate when opioid exposure is possible.
